Mustard powder is a blend of white and brown mustard seeds of the plants B. juncea (for brown seeds), B. alba and Sinapsis alba (for white seeds) mixed with wheat or rice flour and spices such as turmeric for extra color. Mustard seeds can be black, brown, white or yellow. They are harvested from plants of the Brassicaceae family native to Europe and western Asia. Species of the white mustard are now cultivated in Canada and the US. The stems of the mustard plant are harvested and dried just before the seedpods are ripe and ready to burst open.

Mild mustard powder with its sweet, slightly piquant, earthy taste, can be added in numerous recipes. It is a great seasoning for meat, poultry and fish to be grilled or slow cooked in the oven. It can be used to enhance the flavor of barbecue sauce. It is also good with oven-baked or grilled potatoes and other vegetable dishes. Hot mustard powder can be used as an ingredient in yogurt dips, mayonnaise dips and salad dressings. It can also add a unique taste to cheesy pasta dishes, as it combines well with hard and sharp cheeses. Mild mustard powder can also be added in curry recipes.

Mild mustard powder combines best with malawi peppers, ground cumin, greek oregano, greek thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric, saffron, fennel seeds and coriander seeds
