Chinese Gunpowder Tea

Camelia sinensis

Country of Origin: China

Gunpowder is a variety of green tea in which the leaves of the plant are rolled one by one, in small round pellets to maintain their shape, to protect against damage and to preserve their aroma and taste. The English name "gunpowder" is due to the shape of the wrapped leaves that resemble gunpowder. When the pellets are immersed in hot water and soaked, they unfold and release their aromas. This particular green tea is one of the oldest teas and its production began in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), more than 1000 years ago. Today, gunpowder is one of the most commercial and popular teas in the western world.

Green tea is considered to have antioxidant activity and to activate the metabolism and help burn fat. Green tea has become subject of research and study on how its consumption affects the reduction of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. What is certain is that a cup of green tea offers alertness, thanks to the caffeine it contains. A cup of green tea contains about 30-40 milligrams of caffeine, while a cup of coffee contains an average of 90 milligrams.

preparation of green tea:

Boil the water, remove from the heat and wait 2-3 minutes for the temperature to drop, ideally, to 70 - 80°C. Pour a little hot water in the teapot or mug in which the tea will be prepared, in order to preheat the walls of the vessel and throw away the water. Then place the green tea pellets in the cup and pour the hot water on top. Let it soak for 2-3 minutes, strain and enjoy!

After straining you can add honey or sugar.

Dose: 1 teaspoon per cup of water

variations - suggestions:

You can add 1-2 mint leaves to soak together with the green tea as they do in Morocco and you will have the authentic Moroccan Mint Tea

Especially for weight loss you can mix in equal amount of green tea together with lemon beebrush and put a teaspoon of the mixture in a cup of water.

CAUTION! Green Tea should be avoided during pregnancy
