Glycyrrhiza glabra

Country of origin: China

Licorice has many benefits to the health of the body. It detoxifies the body, acts as a spasmolytic, increases blood pressure, reduces inflammation of the respiratory system, treats stomach upsets and relieves period pains.

Licorice increases blood pressure in people who suffer from hypotension. It restores blood pressure to normal levels, stimulates the body, boosts energy levels and prevents dizziness and fatigue caused by low blood pressure. It should not be consumed by people who suffer from hypertension.

Licorice root has anticonvulsant properties and can soothe the symptoms of epileptic disorders and muscle spasms. Liquorice also relieves from rapids (fast heartbeats) and contractions of the digestive system. This contributes to the smooth functioning of the muscles throughout the body.

Licorice root is recommended for cases of upper respiratory tract inflammation. It helps to relieve mucus from the respiratory tract and at the same time soothes the irritated throat and prevents the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, which slow down the recovery process.

The diuretic action of liquorice contributes to the detoxification of the body and the elimination of salts, fats, toxins and water through urination. It should be consumed with caution as it can cause dehydration.

The root is traditionally used by women to relieve the symptoms of dysmenorrhoea and period cramps. It also reduces the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome such as mood swings, depression and hormonal disorders.

The licorice can be used in combination with St John' s wort to fight stress and anxiety. It has excellent sedative properties, improves mood and restores stress hormones to normal levels.

Licorice should not be consumed to an excessive extent as some of its side effects are increased blood pressure, avitaminosis, fluid retention and erectile dysfunction.

It is forbidden to drink liquorice in women during pregnancy and during breastfeeding. It should not be used in conjunction with any other medication without the advice of a physician.

CAUTION! Liquorice root should be avoided during pregnancy
